Spanish All Around You!

I'm finally starting to get in the swing of things again this year, and I, of course, got the infamous "back-to-school-cold"!  So sorry for not updating in a while. I wanted to share with you a wonderful project that I love having my students complete. 

Now, my students do not live in a town that has a high population of Hispanics, especially in our schools. So I created "Spanish All Around You" project.  They were constantly telling me that they didn't see Spanish in our town, or that they didn't know anyone, so I needed to change that! 

It's pretty basic, I have them go around THEIR community and collect 6 items in Spanish. It can be anything they have at home (cell phone instructions, xBox instructions, hair straightener, etc) or they can go around the community (restaurants, library, grocery store, etc.) to find the items. I even had a student find some Spanish on a visor in their parent's car (the air bag warning). It's always awesome when they realize it's EVERYWHERE.  At the end, they write me a summary (in English-since it's so early in the year), and I love reading those. They're always so very excited. Almost all of them say, "I never realized how much Spanish is around me."

Classroom setup día 1

I FINALLY made it into my room to really get into setup. I went in last week to bring some stuff, but I spent a good 3 hours there today. So I thought I'd share some of my new creations. One of my bulletin boards. This is just a beginning of the year one. I include famous Spanish-speaking celebrities, with some quotes around their faces. Then I include some common careers where Spanish can be helpful! I decided to make a 1 MINUTE UNTIL DISMISSAL  sign(s) that I found on Pinterest here .  No where near as together, but I like the setup for now. Then I decided I needed a   "Voice-O-Meter" (Contador de la voz) .  This is a change-up from my stop-light format I used last year. I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to leave it one the ribbon. So far

It's hard to believe that we're already a few weeks into this school year. It's been going well. I wanted to touch base & let you know how some of my ideas have been working out so far. TWO WEEK MODEL First of all, I love this idea! I think it's going to keep me on track in the long run. My students are still only in the input "week" (I teach block schedule, and don't see the students every day. Every other day for 63 minutes). We had so many drills last week, that I lost class time in almost all of my classes. That being said, I love what I'm seeing so far! I had a handful of students volunteering for reading items in Spanish, which was awesome! Even if they made mistakes, this format of the input week gives them the time to get used to hearing the vocab. for a long time before they're saying it. Back to School Blessing!

What?! Already?! Yesterday in church, we received the "back to school blessing" for teachers and students. It seems like summer just started, especially because we had a lot of snow days this winter. At any rate, I thought I'd share some ideas that I've been creating for this upcoming school year. What does my grade mean poster? On certain in-class assignments, I assign students a check system. It's something that I started doing, mostly because my cooperating teacher did this when she graded.
